The little Venice of Provence ... Stroll through its narrow streets and along the banks of the Sorgue and you will be charmed by Isles sur la Sorgue ... Notice to the amateurs of secondhand trade, Isles is famous for its Antique dealers.
L'Isle sur la Sorgue is one of the must-see places in Provence. The "chineurs", amateurs of beautiful objects, secondhand trades and art galleries will be filled, there are indeed nearly 300 antique dealers in this small city!
Coloured with green and water, this city-island is located at the foot of the Vaucluse plateau, in the Comtat Venaissin plain, and is crossed by several canals fed by the Sorgue river, hence its name of "Venice of Provence"!
The town is surrounded by the river which extends its two long arms around it. You will appreciate its charm as you stroll along the canals that weave their way through the narrow, ancient streets. You will pass over small bridges and follow the work of the large mossy paddle wheels driven by the Sorgue. An ideal change of scenery for a holiday in Provence.
Don't miss the spectacle of the "Partage des Eaux" near the town, where the river splits in two and forms a shady stretch of water in which plane trees and generous greenery are reflected... In the past, the inhabitants lived mainly from fishing, and the large paddle wheels served as the "engine" for numerous silk factories in the 18th century, then for paper factories in the 19th century. Some of the wheels still work, but only for the pleasure of passers-by...
The historical heritage of L'Isle sur la Sorgue illustrates the importance of the town within the Comtat Venaissin in the 14th century. The Collegiate Church of ND des Anges with its baroque interior is exceptional, the Hospital Pharmacy, in its original decor (18th century) has a rare collection of Moustiers earthenware pots.
Magnificent private mansions converted into art galleries are to be discovered, among them the famous Maison René Char - Hôtel Donadeï de Campredon (18th century), now a museum, which permanently houses a space dedicated to René Char and high-level exhibitions (Miro, Gauguin, Dufy...)
L'Isle sur la Sorgue is now internationally renowned for the large number of antique dealers in the town (open mainly at weekends) and for the many art and painting galleries. Twice a year, at Easter and on the 15th of August, more than 500 antique and second-hand dealers meet here to present their treasures to a clientele coming from all over the world... This fair is enough to make you dizzy, even for the enlightened connoisseurs.
